Heritage-Style Timber Doors for a Patumahoe Renovation

Traditional timber joinery bringing character to a renovated home

When renovating a character home, the right doors can make a significant difference to how authentic the finished spaces feel.

For this Patumahoe renovation, the owners wanted to retain and reinforce the traditional character associated with the home’s era. While the property isn’t strictly a heritage home, its style called for joinery that felt appropriate to its character rather than introducing contemporary doors that might sit at odds with the surrounding architecture.

PK Joinery manufactured the home’s front doors and internal doors, using traditional forms and detailing to help create a cohesive result throughout the renovated spaces.

Respecting character without replicating the past

Heritage-style joinery isn’t limited to formally recognised heritage properties.

Many older and character homes have an established architectural language that is worth respecting during a renovation. Replacing original or traditional features with standard contemporary alternatives can change the way the entire interior feels.

At Patumahoe, the objective was to create new doors that suited the home’s era and the direction of the renovation.

This required an understanding of traditional timber joinery and an appreciation of proportion and detailing, while still manufacturing new joinery for the needs of the home today.

Bespoke doors made for the home

PK Joinery manufactured both the front doors and internal doors for the project.

Panel detailing gives the doors a traditional appearance, with the proportions and profiles contributing to the character of the surrounding rooms. Rather than being selected as isolated products, the doors form part of the wider visual language of the renovation.

Bespoke manufacture is particularly valuable in this type of project because character homes don’t always conform to the dimensions or details of modern standardised products.

Custom timber joinery allows the doors to be created specifically for the property and the intended aesthetic, helping new elements sit more naturally within an established home.

Continuing traditional details throughout the interior

The impact of the joinery becomes particularly apparent when the doors are viewed as part of the completed rooms.

Traditional panel forms complement other character details throughout the house, allowing the new joinery to contribute to an interior that feels consistent rather than pieced together from different eras.

The front doors also play an important role. As one of the first details encountered when entering a home, a bespoke timber entrance can establish its character before moving into the interior spaces.

Together, the exterior and internal doors help carry the traditional design language throughout the renovation.

New joinery with an established feel

The Patumahoe project demonstrates that heritage-style timber joinery can be valuable well beyond formal heritage restoration.

For homeowners renovating an older property, the objective is often not to recreate every historical detail exactly. It is to understand what gives the home its character and introduce new elements that feel appropriate alongside it.

By manufacturing bespoke front and internal doors for this renovation, PK Joinery was able to support that balance.

The result is new timber joinery with the craftsmanship, proportions and character needed to feel at home in its surroundings.
