Custom Timber Doors for a Character-Filled Karaka Home
Bespoke panel doors designed as part of the interior
In a home with a strong design identity, doors can contribute far more than simply separating one room from another.
For this new build in Karaka, the interior was designed with plenty of character and a very specific aesthetic. Rather than relying on standard internal doors, bespoke timber panel doors were used throughout the home to help establish that distinctive look.
PK Joinery manufactured the wooden panel doors to suit the design, creating joinery that feels considered as part of the wider interior rather than added as a purely functional element.

Challenge
Creating the right door for a distinctive home
Standard doors work well when the aim is for them to disappear quietly into an interior. In this Karaka home, the opposite was true.
The architecture and interior design incorporate strong forms and details, with arched openings, contrasting finishes and carefully considered features giving the spaces their individual character. The internal doors needed to sit comfortably within that environment.
Their proportions, panel configurations and detailing therefore became important parts of the overall design.
Bespoke manufacture gave the project the flexibility to create doors specifically for the home rather than adapting the design around a limited selection of standard products.
Process
Made specifically for the project
PK Joinery manufactured the home’s timber panel doors to meet the requirements of the design.
Panelled doors are a traditional form of timber joinery, but there is considerable scope for customisation. The size and arrangement of the panels, overall proportions and finish can all influence how a door feels within a room.
At Karaka, the panel detailing used throughout the home helps create a sense of continuity between different spaces, reinforcing the distinctive character of the interior.
This is one of the advantages of working with a bespoke joinery manufacturer. Rather than selecting the closest available standard door, the joinery can be made to suit the architecture and the intended character of the space.
Design
Making functional elements part of the interior
The finished doors demonstrate how something inherently practical can also become an important design feature.
Dark painted panel doors provide definition against lighter walls, creating a strong architectural element of their own. The detailing introduces depth and texture without competing with the other features of the home.
The result is an interior where the doors feel like part of a broader design language.
That is particularly valuable in homes with a distinctive aesthetic. Repetition of carefully considered details can create consistency between spaces, even as the function and appearance of individual rooms change.
Outcome
Bespoke doors with character
The Karaka residence shows the difference custom timber doors can make to the overall character of a home.
By manufacturing the panel doors specifically for the project, PK Joinery was able to support a design that called for something more individual than a standard internal door.
It also demonstrates that bespoke timber joinery doesn’t need to be reserved for feature entrance doors or complex exterior windows. Interior doors are used and seen every day, making them an opportunity to introduce craftsmanship and detail throughout a home.
For homeowners and designers with a particular vision in mind, custom manufacture provides the freedom to create doors that belong to the space around them.
